DESCRIPTION:overview\n\nThe Talent\nPieta Brown: Hailed as a “self-styled poetess\, folk goddess\, and country waif” by the BBC\, Pieta Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her self-titled debut in 2002. Since then she has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums\, EPs and singles\, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style\, but also the power of her singing and songwriting\, including fan favorite\, Paradise Outlaw\, which Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon has called his “favorite recording made at our studio.” Brown has toured worldwide with artists such as John Prine\, Amos Lee\, Brandi Carlisle\, JJ Cale\, Ani DiFranco\, Mavis Staples\, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made guest appearances on albums by Calexico\, Amos Lee\, Howe Gelb\, and Iris Dement. Brown’s most recent album Freeway was co-produced by S. Carey and earned widespread critical acclaim from NPR Music\, Stereogum\, Billboard\, FLOOD\, Paste\, American Songwriter\, Folk Alley\, and Relix. She followed that shortly after with the bold and experimental single “Follow You” as well as an EP/digital triptych collaboration recorded at Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s HIVER Festival called We Are Not Machines featuring Ani DiFranco\, S. Carey\, Holland Andrews\, Jenn Wassner\, and more. In 2022 Pieta further expanded her musical prowess by recording and releasing an album of original cinematic instrumentals\, The Less I Needed The Better I Felt\, under the moniker Sylvee & The Sea featuring John Convertino (Calexico)\, Don Was\, and CJ Carmerieri (Carm). She also co-produced Iris DeMent’s most recent album Workin’ On A World\, which has garnered praise from Rolling Stone and The New York Times among many others. Along the way she has earned respect and accolades for her talents in soundtrack design\, videography\, and photography as well; Brown’s photographs have appeared in gallery shows and on numerous album covers for fellow artists. DESCRIPTION:overview\n\nThe Talent\nLone Piñon is a New Mexican string band\, or “orquesta típica”\, whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of their region’s cultural roots. With fiddles\, upright bass\, guitars\, accordions\, vihuela\, and bilingual vocals\, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. The Norte has long been a crossroads of cultures\, and centuries of intersecting histories\, trade routes\, migrations\, and cultural movements have endowed the region with an expansive and rich musical heritage that weaves together Spanish\, Mexican\, Indigenous\, European immigrant\, Anglo-American\, and Afro-American musical influences. The oldest strands of this tradition have survived in continuity\, renewed by each new generation’s contribution to core style and repertoire that has been passed from musician to musician\, in some cases over many centuries. Though rapid cultural change since the ‘50s has led to these sounds becoming scarce in their home territory\, they never fully disappeared–thanks to the elders and past generations that lovingly and tenaciously carried them forward\, renewing the voice of their musical ancestors at each step into changing circumstances. The musicians of Lone Piñon learned from elder musicians who instilled in them a respect for continuity and an example of the radicalism\, creativity\, and cross-cultural solidarity that has always been necessary for musical traditions to adapt and thrive in each generation. In 2014\, Lone Piñon was founded as a platform for creativity around the oldest sounds of traditional New Mexico string music\, sounds that had all but disappeared from daily life in many Northern New Mexico communities. Through relationship with elders\, study of field recordings\, connections to parallel traditional music and dance revitalization movements in the US and Mexico\, and hundreds of local and national performances\, they have brought the language of the New Mexico orquesta típica back onto the modern stage\, back onto dance floors\, into a contemporary aesthetic/artistic conversation\, and into the ears of a young generation. The musical landscape of Northern New Mexico bears the record of interconnecting musical movements that cross state\, national\, generational\, and ethnic borders. In the tradition of Guthrie and Prine\, Chris lends a quavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefined. Regardless if you’re sitting by a backyard fire on a muggy Louisiana night or standing stage-side in some far flung town\, when you hear Chris Acker playing\, you’re hearing the end result of countless hours of observing the masters of the craft…and the end result of repeating their mistakes. From the folk revival through the golden age of country music\, deafened by punk shows and brass bands alike\, Chris’s songwriting is a nod to the absurd yet muted brilliance that inhabits the molded corners of the bars he patrons and cratered street he treads\, paired with a pained honesty that merits a long second look. Acker released his fourth full-length album\, Famous Lunch\, on Gar Hole Records in October of 2024. Famous Lunch contains some of his best work yet: laid back\, country-rockers like “Wouldn’t Do For You (Buddy)” and “Shit Surprise” (which Paste Magazine called a “song of the year contender” in 2024)\, a few raucous\, bar-ready joints like “Don’t You Know (Who I Think I Am)” and “Bunn Machine”\, and tender\, folky triumphs like “Stubborn Eyes” and “Eyelash”\, all showcasing Chris’ gift of building “vivid scenes at an impressively low word count” (No Depression). Acker tours solo or with his band The Growing Boys — Zach Thomas (bass)\, Nikolai Shveitser (pedal steel)\, Dave Hammer (guitar\, vocals)\, Sam Gelband (drums\, vocals)\, and occasionally Howe Pearson (piano). \nChris Acker is gonna play with The Growing Boys and the Montvales are gonna open for them. \n \nThe Montvales: Born and raised in Knoxville\, TN\, Sally Buice and Molly Rochelson of The Montvales spent much of their formative years busking amidst the Elvis impersonators and musical saw players of the town’s Market Square\, honing their uniquely boisterous harmonies and perfecting the art of people-watching. DESCRIPTION:overview\n\nThe Talent\nDave Moore is one of the great songwriters to come out of the state of Iowa. Known for his elegant songwriting and instrumental prowess on blues guitar\, button accordion and harmonica he has become somewhat of a legend. Coming of age in the late ’60s and early ’70s\, Dave enrolled in college only to drop out to follow a girlfriend down to Guadalajara\, Mexico. Though the journey lasted only a few months\, it was to be the first of many travels in Latin America and totally altered his world view. Returning to the States for the holidays in 1971\, his mother serendipitously left a harmonica in his Christmas stocking and he soon found that he could not quit playing it. DESCRIPTION:The “Golden Era” of bluegrass may be a long time gone — but not to the members of Long Time Gone. This band brings back to life the classic bluegrass hits of the 1950s\, hearkening back to an era when Bill Monroe\, Flatt & Scruggs and The Stanley Brothers ruled the country airwaves. Led by the soulful voice of Leo Rosenstein (mandolin)\,  Ben Manning(guitar) and Katryn Conlin (bass) anchor the band’s rhythm section while two of the region’s leading instrumentalists\, Barry St. Mane (banjo and Mike Hildebrandt (fiddle)\, trade dazzling breaks. \nBut Long Time Gone isn’t just about traditional bluegrass. The band branches out into old-timey songs of the 1920s and original songs written by band members. Double fiddle tunes\, a touch of Celtic\, hard-driving banjo instrumentals and quite a bit of instrument swapping keeps Long Time Gone shows entertaining. \n“It’s not just about playing the fastest tunes or the most intricate arrangements\, it’s also about having fun\,” says Ben Manning\, who handles much of the band’s front work. “This band evolved from a regular jam session that began back in 2000\, and we’ve always valued being good friends. We hope that enjoyment and ‘comfort zone’ of the band comes through in the music we make together.” \nBased in Minnesota\, the band’s favorite habitat ranges from Minneapolis-Saint Paul down the Mississippi River to Red Wing\, but they range further afield if the occasion arises. Long Time Gone plays bluegrass festivals\, summer concerts in the park\, weddings\, private parties\, civic events and just about any engagement that calls for the music of fiddle\, banjo\, mandolin and that classic high\, lonesome\, bluegrass sound.

DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a great new class coming up – Seed Art!\nHave you been through the Seed Art exhibits in the Horticultural Building at the MN State Fair? If so\, you may have seen winning entries by Amy or Steve Saupe. Amy and Steve are a father/daughter team who will be teaching a Seed Art class at Lake City Area Arts on Saturday\, May 23rd from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.\n\n\nParticipants will learn techniques for creating a seed artwork\, how to enter seed art in the MN State Fair\, and then have the opportunity to create their own 4 x 6 inch seed work. Participants will take home a kit featuring about a half dozen of our favorite seeds and all the tools necessary to start seeding. Amy and Steve have been creating seed artworks since 2017. They have won multiple (14) ribbons for their work at the MN State Fair and are in the advanced class. They were finalists for the MN State Fair Commemorative Artist Award in 2023. Their work has been displayed at MSP Airport and was featured on a billboard used to promote the 2024 State Fair. More info to come. Class size is limited to 20. PCost: $15 for LCAA members\, $20 for non-members. reregistration is required. This class is subsidized by a grant from the Greater Lake City Community Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:The Lake Pepin Messabout is a regional gathering all those who build or love home-built boats.  That includes canoes\, kayaks\, sailboats and powerboats.  Admission is free. \nAlso visit our Facebook Group: Lake Pepin Messabout for more info about this year’s messabout\, plus photos and action videos from previous years. \nAs always\, the messabout will be at beautiful Lake Pepin\, on the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  \nThe high cliffs and woodlands surrounding the lake create a beautiful boating site.  The lake is huge\, and absorbs lots of boats\, so there’s no crowding.  The sailing can be adventurous\, and you’ll see some wonderful boats cruising the area.  Don’t worry about the current.  It’s a non-factor since the lake is so big. Be vigilant near the barge channel\, which is nearly a mile away on the Wisconsin side.  They go fast and it can be lights–out if you don’t stay out of their way! \nYou don’t need to bring your own watercraft\, but if you do\, it’ll be more fun for everyone.  We welcome people who are boat builders\, curious about building their first boat\, or even just like boats in general.  There will be more than enough rides available if you just want to experience some of these marvelous boats. This is a family-type event\, so kids are welcome as long as you keep track of them and respect everyone’s space. Pets are also allowed at the campground\, but please remember to keep them leashed and clean up after them!
